A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
