The Substance

Director Coralie Fargeat's bold satire tackles the tyranny of female beauty as well as the perceived horrors of ageing. This Supernatural Story

Soderbergh tests his film-making abilities with this clever supernatural story captured wholly from the viewpoint of a ghost. After a clan including mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their fresh home, the lens – as the unseen entity – follows them around. The daughter appears sensing the poltergeist, and it looks like guarding her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that may be unexpected. Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Cage fully commits to his eccentric image via this meta comedy caper. He acts as a self-obsessed Hollywood actor named Nicolas Cage who takes on a $1m payday to attend a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for the wealthy superfan Javi. Hired by the intelligence agency to spy on the suspected cartel boss, his unconventional method proves useful. Saturday 11 October, evening, on Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

The director's contained scarefest stands strong despite the lack of a continuation. Located in 1978 Denver, multiple child abductions has left the children on edge. Once Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and locked up in a basement, he dreads a fatal end. Yet the old telephone on the wall keeps ringing, with eerie communicators providing assistance, while the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, late evening, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for Mammon in this director's delightfully tacky biopic of the disgraced religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor acts as the corrupt Bakker, who states at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals commence capitalizing on the American public's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, bad makeup and bad faith, though Chastain manages to show Tammy Faye in a likable light. October 14th, late night, Film4

The Spy Mystery

This week's additional entry by the same director is a espionage tale as tight similar to the collars used by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. His assignment is to identify a mole among the team from five suspects – including is his own wife. Both actors excel of calm composure, so a delicious psychological game of fact versus fiction unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the smart espionage amusement. October 17th, various showings, Sky Cinema
