Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge specific decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
